CONTEMPORARY CRAFT GALLERY
FIRST BIENNIAL EXCELLENCE IN CRAFT AWARDS

Portland, Ore. – March 17, 2003 - Contemporary Crafts Gallery honors those who have made an exceptional contribution to the craft community in the First Biennial Contemporary Crafts Gallery Excellence in Craft Awards ceremony, taking place on Saturday, September 20th at 7 pm. These awards will serve as an acknowledgment of creativity, determination, and artistic achievement as well as support of the craft field. The ceremony will be followed by a reception honoring the recipients (location to be announced). Those selected will receive a unique hand-made award and be included in a group exhibition at the gallery.

CCG is currently seeking statewide nominations for this event. Awards will be given in the following six categories:
Artist of the Year – an artist who has enriched and advanced the craft field in Oregon in significant ways this past year, showing a high degree of leadership and commitment to his/her media.

Traditional Artist – an artist whose craft was learned as part of the cultural life of a community such as a regional, ethnic, religious or occupational group. A traditional artist’s work often reflects the history, culture aesthetics and values of a community.

Emerging Artist – an artist in the beginning stages of his/her career and who has exemplified leadership and excellence in their craft at this early stage. Artist must have completed a minimum of either a B.F.A. or M.F.A. degree at an accredited college or university, a residency at a non-degree granting institution or a studio apprenticeship within the last five years.

Lifetime Achievement – an artist who has made major contributions to his/her media and to the craft community. The artist must have worked in the craft field for a minimum of 25 years, provided leadership and enriched the lives of other artists and patrons.

Educator of the Year – an individual who has made significant efforts to promote knowledge and awareness of craft in an educational setting.

The Ruth Patterson Hart Award (Friend of Craft) – an individual or organization that has advanced and enriched the craft community by providing counsel, promotion, funding, collecting or other significant support.

Nominees must reside in Oregon or Clark County, Washington to be eligible and must fall within the following CCG-supported definition of craft: the creation of original objects through an artist’s disciplined manipulation of traditional craft materials including clay, glass, fiber, metal and wood. Nominations are made by submitting a letter that includes both the nominator’s and nominee’s name and contact information, the category for which the individual or organization is being nominated and a detailed explanation in 300 words or less of why the nominee should receive the award. Supplemental materials must include a resume or short biography outlining the career of the nominee, a list of exhibitions, projects or any information that delineates the person’s career accomplishments, images of artist’s work - maximum number of slides (20) or photographs (10) and any other auxiliary information including catalogues, articles and printed materials.

Nomination materials should be postmarked by May 1, 2003 and must include all of the above material to be considered for nomination. Materials sent without a SASE will not be returned.
Contemporary Crafts Gallery is collaborating with various arts organizations, private galleries, artists and museum curators to coordinate and plan this event.
